Hunt Till The End

Tom’s last minute buck, 2017

We’ve all heard the stories of last minute success. We all say we’re going to do it. But after days and sometimes weeks of frustrating hunts it is awfully easy to brush off that last day to sleep in or pass on that last afternoon hunt to enjoy a few beers in camp till “next year”.

Here’s some examples of last minute success. Tom, 2017 the last afternoon before his flight to Colorado the next day. Aaron with his last day 2018, 8 pointer. There’s me with the cow elk I shot with about 10 minutes of legal time left on my last evening in Montana in 2018, Tom again with his great mule deer, and finally Rich with the “Snow Buck”, the heaviest ever taken at my camp.

It all happens so quickly. Why can’t it happen on the last day as opposed to the first?

Sometimes I really believe we actually “paint ourselves into a corner” of our own making… Think about it. We’ve been waiting 11 months since last season. We’re amped to return to camp, so we actually get there too early. Mother Nature has her own calender and it doesn’t revolve around us! We show up, full of energy and anticipation and start pounding out “All Day’ers” before the deer have even started moving.. After awhile, the doubts creep in. Maybe we should go to the other camp.. Maybe the coyotes got them.. Maybe we should try some other areas..

Well maybe, we should calm the f@%k down, take a breather, and build our energies, enjoy our time in the woods, and be ready to hammer out those long days when the time is right! Just Saying…
